After four years of standstill due to Covid and the military coup, we were glad to be finally able to return to Yangon and relaunch our educational program with the neurosurgical department of Yangon General Hospital.

Together with Dr. Mya Hla Kywe, who has just come back from her SNI-financed fellowship to Switzerland with Dr May Hsu Mon, we successfully performed surgery on a life-threatening complex vascular malformation in a 37 year old patient.

2024 will see an increased activity in training young promising medical specialists from Myanmar in Switzerland: The future neurosurgeons Dr. Wai Min Thet and Dr. Thein Htet Aung will join Inselspital in spring, followed in summer by three female residents including a neurosurgeon - Dr. Myat Mon Zin Thein, a neuro-anaesthetist - Dr. Hsu Lwin Lwin Thaw, and a specialized scrub nurse - Ms. Seinn Moh Moh, giving much needed support to the Myanmar neurosurgical community. Fellowships for reconstructive surgery and stroke specialists are planed for the end of 2024.
